Born and raised in Medford, Chief Canale has served on the Medford Township Police Department in various capacities since 1989, joining the department after serving 10 years as a police officer in East Windsor. He earned a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Columbia Southern University and graduated in the 195th Class for the F.B.I. National Academy. In his 30 year career Chief Canale has been involved in virtually every aspect of the department. He has consistently taken advantage of the almost limitless opportunities for training and education afforded him by the department, and because of that he has accepted numerous responsibilities in serving the residents of Medford. His roles over the years have included:
- Police officer-including K-9 handler
- Tactical and Scuba team member
- Detective - detached and supervised two F.B.I. organized crime and narcotics task forces over a six year period
- Detective detached to the D.E.A. Narcotics Task Force
- Detective Sergeant- providing daily supervision of all criminal investigations and School Resource Officers
- Patrol Sergeant- supervise day to day functions of the Field Operations Bureau
- Hostage Crisis Negotiators Commander- supervising all county crisis/hostage situations
- Lieutenant, Field Operations Division- oversee Operations Division, Specialty units, and Police Communications
- Lieutenant, Criminal Investigation Bureau- dealing with Investigative matters, Counter Terrorism and the overall management of the Bureau
- Captain- Office of Professional Responsibility and Internal Affairs.
Along the way Chief Canale has received numerous awards and commendations for service to his community. Among those organizations honoring him has been:

- South Jersey Fraternal Order of Police
- Burlington County Prosecutor Office

- Medford Township Police
